We have responsibilities.
And whether your responsibilities include family, bills, work, kids, volunteerism…or all of that, we have to make time for self-care.
Let me repeat that: We have to make time for ourselves.
Relaxing doesn’t necessarily have to translate into doing absolutely nothing, on the couch, all day. Although yep – that sure would be nice! When I think about how I relax, I find ways to fit relaxation into my lifestyle, and relaxation is different for different people. Blogging might be a job for some , but for me it’s a something that helps me unwind.

Diffuse the Situation
Sometimes I don’t have to make a grand gesture to get my relaxation on. Sometimes, it’s as simple as the right combination of essential oils in my diffuser emitting a pleasant, satisfying aroma as I get ready for bed, and turn in for the night.
I have a post in mind to share some of my favorite diffuser combinations, but when it comes to my favorite that make me feel happy and calm, I love the pairing of lavender and ylang ylang essential oils. I pop three or four drops of each into my diffuser, and let it go. It’s such a pleasant scent to me that it automatically helps me get in a good frame of mind as I lay down and try to turn off my brain and sleep.
Bloggers Gonna Blog
There have been times when blogging felt like an utter chore. But lately, as I’ve given new life to my site and my content, I feel a lot of creative juices flowing, and I enjoy any time I get to sit at my computer!
It’s not just the content creation, though. I find myself enjoying the relaxation of planning – I sketch out what my month of posts will look like in advance and course-correct as needed throughout the month.
But writing has always been a huge part of my life, and I can’t be away from it very long; I think I would be lost without it.
Netflix and Nails
Sometimes, you just need to plop down on the couch with a box of Girl Scout cookies, your binge-worthy show of the moment, and paint your nails.
I say Netflix, but I have been watching Hulu quite a bit; we cut the cord on cable a few months ago, and Hulu gets me my new episode fix on Grey’s Anatomy, This is Us, Will & Grace and 9-1-1. I’m always in the middle of a binge on Netflix, though, it’s nice to have something to fall back on when you don’t have anything else you want to watch.
Also – the doing my nails part. I sit down with my supplies, start my show and carefully and slowly give myself a manicure. There was a time when I changed my polish and nail art every night. Now I’m lucky if I get to do it twice a week. But I make time for it, because it’s relaxing, and I enjoy looking at the finished work!
I steal moments of relaxation where I can and sometimes, on weekends, my husband will watch my daughter and I’ll get ready for the day. I use this opportunity to do stuff I don’t have time for during the work week, like using a facial mask, shaving, and using body/facial scrubs, including my Pixi Peel and Polish.
I’ll pull out all the stops on my moisturizers, serums, and makeup. It’s wonderful, and if we’re off somewhere after, I feel refreshed that I had time to myself to get ready and pamper myself a little bit!
I’ve always been an avid reader. I used to read dozens upon dozens of books a year. But in the past several years, I’ve slacked off. Making time to read is a treat now, and I sometimes force myself to stay away from screen time whether on the computer or television, to fit in as much as I can of a book I’m enjoying or would enjoy.
I love a variety of books, from memoir to fiction, and I have quite a bit of books in boxes still packed from my move (more than two years ago…I don’t even know where the boxes are!) that I want to make progress on!
