Five Ways I Relax

Adulting is hard.

We have responsibilities.

And whether your responsibilities include family, bills, work, kids, volunteerism…or all of that, we have to make time for self-care.

Let me repeat that: We have to make time for ourselves.

Relaxing doesn’t necessarily have to translate into doing absolutely nothing, on the couch, all day. Although yep – that sure would be nice! When I think about how I relax, I find ways to fit relaxation into my lifestyle, and relaxation is different for different people. Blogging might be a job for some , but for me it’s a something that helps me unwind.

So check out my five ways of relaxing. And I’d love to hear some of yours in the comments below!

Diffuse the Situation

Sometimes I don’t have to make a grand gesture to get my relaxation on. Sometimes, it’s as simple as the right combination of essential oils in my diffuser emitting a pleasant, satisfying aroma as I get ready for bed, and turn in for the night.

I have a post in mind to share some of my favorite diffuser combinations, but when it comes to my favorite that make me feel happy and calm, I love the pairing of lavender and ylang ylang essential oils. I pop three or four drops of each into my diffuser, and let it go. It’s such a pleasant scent to me that it automatically helps me get in a good frame of mind as I lay down and try to turn off my brain and sleep.

Bloggers Gonna Blog

There have been times when blogging felt like an utter chore. But lately, as I’ve given new life to my site and my content, I feel a lot of creative juices flowing, and I enjoy any time I get to sit at my computer!

It’s not just the content creation, though. I find myself enjoying the relaxation of planning – I sketch out what my month of posts will look like in advance and course-correct as needed throughout the month.

But writing has always been a huge part of my life, and I can’t be away from it very long; I think I would be lost without it.

Netflix and Nails

Sometimes, you just need to plop down on the couch with a box of Girl Scout cookies, your binge-worthy show of the moment, and paint your nails.

I say Netflix, but I have been watching Hulu quite a bit; we cut the cord on cable a few months ago, and Hulu gets me my new episode fix on Grey’s Anatomy, This is Us, Will & Grace and 9-1-1. I’m always in the middle of a binge on Netflix, though, it’s nice to have something to fall back on when you don’t have anything else you want to watch.

Also – the doing my nails part. I sit down with my supplies, start my show and carefully and slowly give myself a manicure. There was a time when I changed my polish and nail art every night. Now I’m lucky if I get to do it twice a week. But I make time for it, because it’s relaxing, and I enjoy looking at the finished work!

At-home Spa

The Creme Shop Peppermint Infused Face Mask CVS review

I steal moments of relaxation where I can and sometimes, on weekends, my husband will watch my daughter and I’ll get ready for the day. I use this opportunity to do stuff I don’t have time for during the work week, like using a facial mask, shaving, and using body/facial scrubs, including my Pixi Peel and Polish.

I’ll pull out all the stops on my moisturizers, serums, and makeup. It’s wonderful, and if we’re off somewhere after, I feel refreshed that I had time to myself to get ready and pamper myself a little bit!

Read

I’ve always been an avid reader.  I used to read dozens upon dozens of books a year. But in the past several years, I’ve slacked off. Making time to read is a treat now, and I sometimes force myself to stay away from screen time whether on the computer or television, to fit in as much as I can of a book I’m enjoying or would enjoy.

I love a variety of books, from memoir to fiction, and I have quite a bit of books in boxes still packed from my move (more than two years ago…I don’t even know where the boxes are!) that I want to make progress on!

What are some of the ways that you relax? Do you relate to any of my relaxation techniques?! I’d love to hear!

    • BeautyJudy

You deserve all the pampering in the world momma!!!

  • Natoya

Netflix is life! but, besides that. I was on the fence about the diffuser and thought that they were kind of just a trend. But it actually really does work to calm you and put you at ease.

    • BeautyJudy

So true! I have been skeptical of oils use in general but I’ve really found a few things that truly work and I’m shocked by it but in a good way!

Nail polish and Netflix is a huge one for me. Blogging is sometimes relaxing, and other times (when Im under multiple deadlines) it’s stressful.

    • BeautyJudy

Lots of love for Netflix and Nails!!!!! It’s such a nice way to unwind!

  • LittleNuclearReactor

Netflix and nails is my life! Just gotta avoid any shows that I’d need subtitles for lol Can’t read and do nail art at the same time 🙁

    • BeautyJudy

Hanits funny you say that I was watching Rita last week and it’s al subtitles and I had trouble doing my nails, it took me forever lol!

    • BeautyJudy

      Yes yes!

  • marciaf

Relaxing to me is reading or taking extra time so I can luxuriate with beauty products. I hope after Josie arrives that you have some of this relax time.

    • BeautyJudy

I hope you were able to relax when you were sick!!! And yes me too. I have some fitness goals to accomplish, blogging, and relaxing to make time for and I’m sure something will take a back seat as I adjust to my new norm!

  • Declare Your Heart of Gold Blo

Thanks for sharing this! you mentioned a lot of ways that I like to relax too. Glad we can relate on those levels, haha!

  • Kristi Vasquez

I hear you on the reading. One year I read 1 book a week and then my husband bought me an iPad (I blame him for my laziness). 🙂 I miss reading and escaping.

    • BeautyJudy

I tried reading on my iPad, I had a Kindle…and I honestly am so old school I really just want the book in hand! Did you try reading on your iPad?!

Netflix and Nails is totally my thing!! I was giving a diffuser a try but after so much back and forth on is being dangerous for my fur babies I quit using it. Too scared!

    • BeautyJudy

Lol yes!! There are great articles out there that provide educated guidance and advice on oils and kitties and other pets. I don’t blame you for being overly cautious though!

  • Yvette Price

I’ve read most of the books on your mantle there! I switched to books on tape, since I have a very long commute. Spending 3 hrs on the road a day, I consume a lot of books!

    • BeautyJudy

That’s awesome! Both on havingbread these books and also on the tapes. That is smart!!!

  • http://www.thefabzilla.com Kathryne

Isn’t it nice to expand content? yes, more creative juices flowing!

    • BeautyJudy

Yes it is, I am having fun!!!

  • http://www.polishgalore.com/ PolishGalore

I’m too scared to cut the cord on cable! I know it’s silly considering I only watch the same 5-10 shows but I just haven’t been able to do it. I definitely thing blogging is a way I relax too because I’ll turn on a show and paint while watching. And then photograph, come back and edit/write while watching tv. I definitely love getting massages and I need to make time for myself again in doing that. I used to go every month! There was even a time that I was going once a week and it was so nice except the drive (it’s an hour away for the place I have a membership at). I also just love to veg in bed and it’s even nicer when I have a cat or two with me.

I read to relax. I want to get a diffuser!

    • BeautyJudy

The diffuser was a surprise hit for me. I don’t use it every night but when I do, I am surprised how much it can affect my mood!

  • http://polishedlifting.com Courtney B

Yes to all of those! I just need to carve out more reading time.

    • BeautyJudy

It’s the one area I want to get better at relaxing with!!!

  • http://www.25sweetpeas.com 25 Sweetpeas

Yesss this is me! Although its nails and youtube when I’m not filming myself! 🙂 But these are all great ways to relax. Love face masks + a nice cuticle scrub pre painting too! Blogging is totally nice too. I like you love writing, and when I feel like I have everything done that needs to be done I LOVE to sit down and work on my writing my book. It’s been put on the back burner lately and I miss it and there has been more motivation lately so I would love to get busy!

    • BeautyJudy

I totally understand your passion for writing! I haven’t done a proper mani with a cuticle remover and moisturizer and such in a long time. That would be a pampering treat I need to do soon!

  • Ehmkay Nails

Netflix and nails for the win! I also love to soak my feet with face masks!

    • BeautyJudy

I haven’t soaked my feet in so long, I should do that soon!!

  • http://www.lustrouslacquer.com/ Lustrous Lacquer

I do Netflix and nails almost weekly. Its my me time when I can tune everything else out and recharge.
