In recent months, I’ve been reaching for mattifying primers and mists and anything that can help my T-zone from becoming an oil slick by midday. When my face gets oily my makeup breaks down; and with a whole lot of red and rosacea underneath, it’s not a confident or comfortable look for me!
That’s why when I toured the Mehron booth at The Makeup Show NYC in May, I zeroed in on SKIN Prep PRO™.
According to Mehron, “SKIN Prep PRO™ is a clear, fragrance-free liquid for use on all skin types prior to makeup application. It allows makeup to remain longer lasting under stressful performance conditions. During an active day at work or play, SKIN Prep PRO™ acts as a moisture barrier between skin and makeup while maintaining that sought after fresh finish. Used under the most extreme conditions, skin feels and continues to look fresh.”
As I looked at the SKIN Prep PRO™ ingredients, a couple stood out to me. Witch Hazel – which explains why SKIN Prep PRO™ feels cool going onto your skin, but also makes it tight as it dries. I apply it to the spots of my face where I experience makeup breakdown the fastest; forehead, nose, cheeks right next to nose and chin.
The tightness disappears as you add your foundation to the face. I purposely left my foundation off for a little while to see how long the tightness lasts; I applied it before leaving my house yesterday, and my face felt tight (although it loosened a bit) until I was ready to put my makeup on, 30 minutes to 45 minutes later. You could use this without makeup, but I think it’d be initially a little uncomfortable.
SKIN Prep PRO™ also has aluminum chlorohydrate, which helps to keep you from perspiring. You may recognize this as a key ingredient in deodorant and antiperspirants.
Here are SKIN Prep PRO™‘s total ingredient list – it’s pretty simple:
Water/Aqua/Eau, SD Alcohol 40B (Alcohol Denat.) Aluminum Chlorohydrate, Hamamelis Virginiana (Witch Hazel) Extract, Octoxynol-9.
There are two icons on the website that state this product is cruelty-free and vegan.
I disagree with the brand’s assertion that this is fragrance-free. It smells antiseptic; definitely the witch hazel, in my opinion! The truth is, it’s not an awful scent, and it doesn’t linger at all. It’s also not as strong as if you were to open a bottle of witch hazel and sniff. It’s the consistency of water and clear. Here it is soaked on my cotton round:
In general, my foundation stays in place with minimal melting or breakdown. It’s not immune to hours and hours of wear, though. If I wear my foundation from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. I’ll have breakdown in my T-Zone.
Still, SKIN Prep PRO™ performs, extending the amount of “fresh” time I have with my makeup look.
I don’t think this would be necessary for those with dry skin, but if you tend to sweat off your makeup, especially in summer, this would help.
You can find SKIN Prep PRO™ here on the Mehron website! It retails for $13.95 normally. I think the price is fantastic, compared to what I’ve paid for mattifying primers and sprays! I would definitely purchase Skin Prep Pro when I run out of what I have.
Have you tried this product? Do you need a mattifying product or a hydrating product? I’d love to know your thoughts!
