IT Cosmetics Confidence in a Compact Review

I bought this

I’m a total IT girl, let me say that upfront.

Your Skin But Better CC Cream is one of my Holy Grail foundations. I keep Bye Bye Redness on standby for those days my redness is particularly rough. The brand’s brushes are my FAV.

I remember the first time I tried IT Cosmetics and almost cried because someone with MY skin problems created a healthy cosmetic line for people like me. There is NOTHING I don’t love about this brand.

Except this one product.

Confidence in a Compact seemed like an awesome idea. A full coverage foundation with anti-aging, hydrating “super” serum; SPF 50+ UVA/UVB broad-spectrum physical sunscreen; collagen and antioxidant-rich super ceraminde cream. The front of the package says, “Skin-Transforming Full Coverage Solid Super Serum,” and I thought, this is gonna be GOOD.

It was love at first packaging sight.

It’s a nice sturdy plastic compact, with white on the bottom and a reflective silver top. Push the little white button to flip open the lid, and you find a foam sponge applicator in a little groove.

Lift up that tab on the right, and upon first use, you’ll find your Super Serum Foundation is sealed!

Gorgeous!

I picked this up in the shade Fair, which is a spot-on color-match for my skin with IT.

To apply this foundation, I either used the included sponge, or I used (right now I can’t afford the $48 Heavenly Skin Skin-Smoothing Complexion Brush that’s suggested) my Heavenly Luxe Complexion Perfection Brush (also $48, purchased when I COULD afford it!), which is dual-ended for both foundation and concealer application.

I tried using this foundation a multitude of ways:

  • By itself
  • Over primer – hydrating, mattifying, neutral
  • With finishing powders – translucent, HD, mattifying
  • With faceATELIER Ultra Matte Mist
  • With the sponge applicator
  • With the aforementioned brush.

Nothing that I tried, no combination of products, or application, seemed to help this foundation look good on my face after a couple hours of wear. Here’s my naked face before the foundation:

It looks pretty good, right? Here’s the finished makeup look wearing it:

The problem isn’t initial application, it’s wear.

For me, I only get a couple hours before this foundation separates on my face. It’s a serum-based foundation, so it doesn’t “dry down,” and looks dewy, which is fine. But it also doesn’t FEEL set, ever, on my skin. I can NOT  touch my face at ANY time or I will have to touch it up. And it doesn’t always touch-up well, sometimes when I try to touch up, it rubs off even more foundation and the product I’m trying to apply doesn’t adhere.

I am embarrassed at the state of my face by end of day when I have worn this to work. My face looks patchy from the wear. And again – I have tried several ways of wearing this foundation so that it has the best shot. I paid good money for it – I want it to work! I took this crappy selfie in the bathroom at work to show you some of the breakdown I get:

It just looks so rough to me. (Apologies again for the crappy pic.)

So much of my redness peeks through, it wears on the chin, above my lips, around my nose, at my T-Zone. I don’t think this is a foundation someone with oily skin should wear – I generally have combination skin.

Speaking of good money. I was dismayed when after a couple days, my compact seemed like it had a significant dent into the product!

Looks can be deceiving, though, I will give it that; while this happened only a couple days in, I’ve used the compact several, several times since and I still haven’t hit pan. I’ve dug that hole deeper, but haven’t hit pan. So it looks scary at first…but I’m getting a ton of use out of it.

As far as scent goes…Confidence in a Compact has a citrusy and sunscreen-y scent to me, which I don’t hate. I can still smell it after the product is on my face, I’ll catch whiffs of it. But it doesn’t last long and I don’t think much about it after an hour or so of wear.

Here’s the ingredients, for those curious, lifted from the IT Cosmetics website:

You can find Confidence in a Compact in Ulta, on QVC, and of course, here on the IT site itself. Suggested retail is $38. It comes in seven shades.

To be honest, now that this review is done, I’m throwing my compact away. I have other foundations – like my trusty Your Skin But Better CC Cream – that do much better by me. And I’ve given this so many repeated tries that I don’t feel guilty giving up.

Have you tried this foundation? I have read some great reviews on it, which is partially why I bought it in the first place. I am so glad this works for some people. I’d love to hear if you are one of them!

  • http://glamorable.com/ Anastasia

Maybe this is better suited for someone with dry skin. Usually balmy foundations separate on me too 🙁

    • BeautyJudy

It definitely is, I mentioned that my skin can be oily or combination, and that’s definitely a bad combo with this foundation. I wanted to love it but that’s ok! They have other great foundations for my skin type!

  • http://www.blushingnoir.com/ Brooke @ Blushing Noir

I did like this but it’s definitely more for those with normal to dry skin!

    • BeautyJudy

Agreed! I should have held onto it for fall/winter but I really hated it lol!

  • Phyrra Nyx

So sorry it doesn’t work for you. I think this definitely works well for my dry skin, but I don’t think it will work for any other skin type.

    • BeautyJudy

That was one of my takeaways! My skin is too combo ornoily to mix with the formula. Perhaps I should hold onto it until cooler weather and see how it fairs then.

  • http://www.primebeautyblog.net PrimeBeauty

Wow that’s disappointing, but honestly I don’t think the breakdown looks as bad as you think it does. Sounds like it’s made for drier skin.

    • BeautyJudy

Agree, and I tend towards combo skin. The breakdown is varying degrees of bad. Some days it’s patchy and so obvious. Other days it’s more subtle. It’s definitely embarrassing either way!

  • marciaf

Even with dry skin this doesn’t last as long as I’d like. I don’t use a setting powder with it or it breaks down. I’m surprised you’ve kept using it knowing that it just doesn’t work for you.

    • BeautyJudy

There are so many primers and setting sprays and powders that I felt like I had to find a combo that worked; I bought it at The Makeup show so it wasn’t like I could return it. I had to give this the old college try!

  • Allison @neversaydiebeauty

IT should be honest and say that this hydrating solid serum foundation is for those with dry skin. It works for my super dry skin, but I’m sure for those with combo/oily skin it would be a no-no especially in summer. I think the same thing for the Paul and Joe Gel Foundation I reviewed this week – it’s for those with dry skin, period.

    • BeautyJudy

I’m so glad it works for you, and I think you’re right about dry skin.
