I bought this.

I saw this Makeup Revolution London Ultra Strobe Balm Palette, and debated it for a bit. I wanted to try it, because the colors look gorgeous, but there was a part of me that knows I can’t stand cream face products (I do like cream foundation, just not blushes, highlighters or eye shadows), and I was worried it’d be a waste of my money.

Was it?

Aren’t the colors beautiful? Here’s quick back-of-the-hand swatches:

Top row, left to right: A beautiful yellow golden color, a peachy-pink, blue glow and champagne.

Bottom row, left to right: a pinky-nude shimmer, glowy pink, green gold and pinky-nude shimmer.

I honestly have a hard time seeing the difference between the first and last shade in the bottom row of the palette, except maybe the one on the right has a touch more darkness to it.

These highlighter balms are really well pigmented. One finger swipe and you’ve got a lot of color picked up. They feel super thin when you run your finger across the pan but the magic is in the color. They also blend out pretty easily. As far as wear – each one I’ve tried has lasted me from the time I apply my makeup in the morning until I take it off that night. Rock solid.

One of the reasons I am not keen on cream face products is that I find myself wiping off my foundation as I try to lay down a blush or a highlighter, whereas a powder just brushes on and doesn’t require rubbing. Because I’ve taken care to minimize my facial redness due to rosacea by wearing a foundation – and usually full coverage – it drives me crazy that this happens.

So I tried something different. I used a mini foam sponge applicator (a tiny baby Beauty Blender, basically). I rubbed it across the balm, then patted it onto my skin – the top of my cheeks, my forehead, bridge of my nose, cupid’s bow. This works like a charm without messing up my foundation. I was thrilled and I’ve used the palette several times already!

Here’s a face shot of me wearing the glowy pink highlighter. Ignore my overall makeup – I took this pic after wearing it for a couple hours and my foundation always wears away where my glasses rest!

I would repurchase this palette. I picked it up at Ulta where it retails for $15.
