I’ll be honest, before Allison of Never Say Die Beauty wrote about White Sands, I’d never heard of the brand!
Her thorough review piqued my interest. I’d been looking for hair products that would help me have a shiny, silky straight do, and a more evenly curled curly do that didn’t frizz.
I had my own opportunity to test and review White Sands products, and I explained to the rep that reached out what concerns I have about my hair, and she sent products to wear test that would help my hair health and styles.
I was curious about the brand so I looked up the “about us” on the website and learned that White Sands has a scrappy, started-with-little background story. White Sands was started and is owned by the Salas family, founded more than 10 years ago.
My introduction to this brand has been fun, and helpful for my hair. I used each of the products over the course of a few weeks to truly test them, since I don’t wash my hair everyday, and I especially don’t straighten it everyday! Below I’ve broken out my review to touch on each product as I used them differently, but there were some common themes I’ll sum up at the end!
Curl Up in Silk
Curl Up In Silk Firm Hold Mousse is said to provide a “different type of curl pattern,” according to the website. The “molecular structure of the ingredients causes the hairs to group together and rope over each other.”
While it’s supposed to help curly hair, it can also be used for round-brush volume styling.
Here’s the back of the canister:
My biggest issue with my hair when I scrunch it and go is that the hair underneath is super curly, while the hair on top is more wavy. So my hair ends up looking weird except on rare days when for some reason, it all just “gels.”
I apply the mousse to my hair after I’ve towel-dried my hair post-shower. I’ve used it alone and in conjunction with some of the other products I’ll talk about today (Cure 24/7 and Leave-in Conditioner).
Curl Up In Silk did not help me in gaining tighter curls where they are wavy, but it doesn’t promise to do that and I’m pretty sure I just lucked out in that department!
What it does do is give a really frizz-free, silky texture to my hair. It swings. It’s not stiff. My hair feels so much nicer than the mousse I usually use, and much softer than the curl defining spray gel I use.
This mousse has a nice, sweet clean scent. Curl Up In Silk is $19.50 and can be found on the White Sands site here; I have spent this kind of money for hair care products from Redken, for example, and for something that feels unlike any mousse I’ve ever used, I would purchase this. Working with my curly and wavy hair is how I typically manage my hair on a regular basis, and it’s nice to have a product you can rely on that makes your hair feel good.
Leave in Conditioner
Leave in Conditioner is the hair care product I use most regardless if my hair is curly or straight. I apply it to my hair after towel-drying, and brush it through to evenly distribute it.
One of the ingredients of this conditioner is orchids extract. Here’s a full list as well as the instructions and information on the back of the bottle:
I find this leave-in to be moisturizing. It smells lovely, light and clean but in a different way from the mousse. The company says that this spray targets damaged areas, giving more love to those parts of the hair. I have no frizz with this product, used in conjunction with the mousse.
Usually, as my hair dries during my curly/wavy days, it will puff out. You can see that it’s relatively calm and not puffy!
The White Sands Leave in Conditioner Spray is $15 for the 8.5 fl oz full size, and $5 for the travel size (not sure how many oz this is). You can find it on the website here. I think the price on this is reasonable – for me, someone who doesn’t typically spend a whole lot on hair care. I would definitely buy this when it runs out.
UnderCover Styling Spray
UnderCover Styling Spray became an instant favorite for me.
This styling spray is another versatile product for me that I can use for curly/wavy or straight hair, especially when using a hair dryer and/or a flat iron.
For curly hair, I use this when I do add a blast of heat to my hair to help curl up my waves and dry things a bit faster.
Where this is a key for me is in straightening my hair. I use it before I blow dry my hair with a round brush. Then, as I use my flat iron to straighten my layers of hair, I will spray this on the sections of hair I’m about to iron. The result is really silky, smooth straight hair!
The website says that it’s “an action packed formula as wheat proteins are ingeniously replaced by silk proteins. The addition of silk automatically skyrockets the shine and moisture factors, turning this into the latest breed of styling sprays. A first of its kind for White Sands and a first of its kind spray for going UnderCover with any hairstyle imaginable: blowouts, curls, sleek & straight, scrunching, braids, flips and waves. Undercover does it all with high power shine and hydration.”
I had to include that blurb because I really do find this to be a versatile, effective thermal protectant.
UnderCover Styling Spray is $21 and available here on the website. I would absolutely purchase this again as my thermal protection!
The Cure 24/7
The Cure 24/7 Serum is described “like a blur cream for hair,” according to the White Sands website. “The Cure 24/7 is a leave-in, reconstructive treatment with visible results within minutes after application. The name says it all: a treatment that can be done day or night, wet or dry. The Cure 24/7 repairs damaged hair fibers, making tresses stronger, smoother, and shinier. Restoring damaged hair has never been so convenient and simple.”
I didn’t use this consistently as I used the other products, to be honest, but it was the product I was most excited to try.
What I’ve found is that I love applying this to dry hair. Sure, I’ll add it to the ends of my hair after I towel-dry it, but I prefer it over dry hair. My hair can feel a little bit like straw when I go a day or two without washing, especially if I scrunch it and wear it curly/wavy, and this helps create a smoother texture. I haven’t truly noticed if it’s helped repair any damage, but I can say that it feels smooth and not greasy on my hair.
Here’s a look at the back of the bottle and ingredients (apologies for how smudged the words look!):
The Cure 24/7 Serum is $29.99 and is available here on the White Sands website. If I’m being honest, while I like how my hair feels with it, I also love how my hair feels with the Leave in Conditioner Spray and UnderCover Styling Spray. I understand that the serum is a repairing treatment, but I feel this is a “nice to have” product and would likely only purchase if it is deeply discounted.
With that said, I’ve had a great experience and introduction to White Sands and I’m impressed that I truly was able to reduce my frizz and have a really nice texture to my scrunch and curly/wavy hair.
Having tried these four products, I can say that my takeaway’s about White Sands include:
- My frizz is reduced
- The scent is light and clean even though it differed in each product
- Price point is doable and on pair with products I might purchase at Ulta
- My hair feels silkier when curly
- My hair feels tame and smooth when straight.
I’m sure there’s more I could say. But this has already been long! Have you ever tried White Sands? I’d love to know what your favorite product is! If you haven’t, what would interest you most from these four products?
