Welcome to What I Reach For Most! This is a regular series that I haven’t updated in a month and a half! I share the brands, or colors, or types of cosmetic products that I reach for most when I’m doing my day-to-day makeup!
Our first year of marriage has certainly had its ups and downs. The highest being our wedding and honeymoon in November 2013. The lowest, our miscarriage. But we’re close to being ready for buying a house, and something very big is official as of this coming Monday:
I got promoted!!!
You might know that by day, I work in corporate communications. I do internal comms and PR. In my new role, I’ll be managing a team, and focusing on PR and issues management. I’m very excited about the new opportunities and challenges!
With this move, I’m going to have a LOT of introductory meetings over the course of the next few weeks. In addition to buying a couple new blazers and “power outfits” for the office, I also thought about the makeup I’ll use, too.
I’m going to want all attention on my personality, and my work, not necessarily my face of the day. So I thought about what work appropriate makeup I love or reach for most, and put together this post.
I won’t touch on foundation or blush in this post, but focus on the eyes and lips; I’ve covered blush in a previous What I Reach for Most.
I am not afraid to wear color in the office, except when I’m meeting with an executive. I embrace neutrals, they are necessary, but they aren’t my favorite. The only thing I love about neutral eye makeup is that it’s better for a bright lip! But man, it does look good, even if it’s not my favorite.
I really like the Pixi Beauty Perfection Palette in Lit-Up Lovely for work appropriate looks:
It’s actually a great palette for travel, too, and I’ve taken it on every business trip I’ve had since I got it last fall. Here’s one look of the day using the palette:
I used some of the lighter shades, and the blush, for this look. And here’s a deeper eye look:
I paired this deeper eye look with a light, neutral lip.
Another palette that recently came into my life that I love for a go-to work look is this Jane Iredale Celebrate Limited Edition Eye Shadow Palette for fall:
Here’s my eye look with this:
It’s a little more daring to me, because I used under-eye eyeliner.
I tend to stick with brown/neutral green shades when it comes to what works for me at the office that is meant to complement, and not draw attention.
I’m also head-over-heels for the Naked 3 palette from Urban Decay.
There are a couple directions I go with lips when it comes to a work appropriate office day.
I truly wear *almost* whatever I want – I exclude colors like blue, green, deep dark purples – but have no problems rocking orange. But there are meetings that require a more toned down look, and I happily oblige. I’ll be having a lot of those soon. Here’s one of my favorite work appropriate lippies, Gorgeous Cosmetics Paris:
Paris is a pop of color, but doesn’t take over my face.
I also like a soft pop of pink, too. The Pixi Tinted Brilliance Balms are GREAT for work, because they go on with a sheen, and the color stains your lips. This is Pretty Pink:
And this is a favorite look I did, with Surratt Beauty Lip Lustre Lip Gloss in Ensoleille!
I MISS MY BLONDE HAIR
Anyway! There are the days when I need OOMPH. Days I’m presenting a plan to someone. I’m speaking. I need to wear my confidence a little more than usual. Those are the days I pump up the pigmentation – like this pretty, Lime Crime Velvetine in Pink Suede:
Or this Wet n’ Wild Fergie Lipstick in Turnt Up:
It’s just the perfect amount of POW!
Another one I love is Surratt Beauty Megalomane:
You’ll notice that part of what makes these bright lips work is that I am minimal on where else I add color – usually just a punch of color in the cheeks, and nothing on my eyes. I’ve started doing mascara on days I don’t wear any eye makeup, thought, I that’s a nice add.
I also reach for my Holy Grail office red – Besame Lipstick in Red Velvet.
So what do you think? What are your personal rules of thumb for work appropriate makeup?! What do you reach for most when you’re doing work appropriate makeup?!
