Do you have a saying, something that you use all the time? A phrase or a word that always finds its way out of your mouth? My coworkers would probably say that I always say, “as a former reporter…” In high school, I always said “I’m turning over a new leaf,” to which my best friend once told me I had finally gotten my own forest.
Well, there’s a new nail polish line coming that captures the best of life’s sayings in its polish names, but that isn’t all that’s supposed to be special about it!
Caption Nail Polish, from Young Nails, is formulated with LacQ3, a technology that provides an air cured, gel-like manicure. LacQ3 combines a triple layer fusion of dual polymer technology, volcanic glass, shellac and plant-derived plasticizers that all work together to create a nail polish that Greg Salo, president of Young Nails, says will last longer, dry faster and fortify nails over time.
I had the opportunity to get my nails done by Greg while at Cosmoprof North America Las Vegas last Sunday, and I was thrilled! As Greg did my nails, he explained the benefits of Caption, and explained how it’s different.
Having a chance to wear test the line before its launch on September 1, how did it hold up? I’ll get to that in just a moment. Right now, take a peek at the line’s upcoming colors! There are 18 Top Effects, and 60 Core Colors. Here’s some of the Core Colors:
Here are some of the Top Effects. Each swatch is by itself on the left, over a polish on the right.
Greg and I picked out my mani together. He was going to do a black and gold holo glitter and I said no, I’m feeling something more crazy. So we landed on a base of Mission Complete (a brilliant blue shimmer) and Outta My Mind, a duochrome glitter sparkler, over top.
If you’re a regular follower, you know I love me some duochrome/multichrome nail polish!
First, Greg took off my existing mani.
He used the safety drill bit he created that doesn’t cut the surface of the nail, but was able to safely buff off the glitter I had on my nails. He ran it over my cuticle and it didn’t scrap at all! Thankfully, he even removed some of the staining I had from my Fourth of July mani on two fingers!
Then, Greg painted my nails with the Caption Base Coat (see that staining? Ugh).
After base coat, he added one layer of Mission Complete:
You can see how opaque this is in one coat.
Then, he added a layer of Outta My Mind:
He added the Caption Top Coat, followed by Caption Drying Drops, and within moments, he was touching my nail bed to demonstrate how much the nails had dried!
My nails were an amazing, beautiful set of multichromal shimmer and sparkle, and I could not stop staring at them the nearly five days I wore them!
So now that we’ve seen how pretty the polish is, and we know how the technology works, and that indeed, it dried quickly and provided beautiful shine (although I did get a dent in my thumb and while attempting to smooth it out I created two more dents on it!), how did it hold up on a wear test?
Here’s how they looked on day 2, my swatch hand under the light of my hotel room lamp:
I’ve got some tip wear, especially bad on my index finger and thumb (where the dent I mentioned happened). Also, I’d had a cat stamp added to my ring finger later in the day by the MoYou Nails brand, and they added another layer of MoYou branded top coat that was not quick dry.
Here’s day 3. Again, my swatch hand, with flash and then without; I even had a bit of a break on my index finger and had to file it down, filing down all the other nails, too.:
My tip wear has turned into some chipping on my index, middle and thumb fingers.
Day 4, the final wear day, my swatch hand:
New chip on my ring finger. My pinky is really the most perfect, with only slight tip wear.
Here’s how my right hand looked on day 4:
Just some slight tip wear. My ring finger was redone on day 3 by Buddy Sims, who used Tatz Nails’ printer to put my blog logo on my nails – story for another day! But my right hand held up much better than the left.
I took the mani off because I had a ton of other polishes to swatch and wear for you, but I was so bummed, I don’t have anything like this at home to recreate the look.
A huge thank you to Greg, it was an honor for him to do my nails!
I will buy Mission Complete, Outta My Mind, the base and top coats, drying drops, and probably a couple other colors and effects, when this site launches.
Greg didn’t cap the tip of my nails when he polished, and I asked him about it. He said you didn’t need to. Since I don’t have any Caption at home, I’m going to make sure to try this again when it launches, and revisit wear time. I know personally my polish does last longer when I cap the tips, and I’m hoping that would extend the chip-free wear of this polish. I admired Greg’s honesty when he said if you’re hard on your nails your wear will be different from someone who isn’t.
Aside from the chips, I was so happy with the colors, the shine, and the overall strength of my nails with this polish on. The break I had was from packing the night before I left Las Vegas.
The Top Effects really seem like they will make for endless combos with the core line, and I can’t wait to see what nail techs and others do with it.
So what do you guys think about Caption? Is this something you want to try and learn more about when it launches? There’s going to be a website for the brand that launches September 1, and the product will be launched for sale on the website October 1 and retail for $15 a bottle.
