Jane Iredale Starter Kit for Skin

Disclaimer: Press sample. See bottom.

Jane Iredale has introduced a new “Starter Kit,” a great way to try out two of its foundations, Pommist Hydration Spray and Smooth Affair Facial Primer and Brightener.

These travel size cosmetics all come in a smart, travel-sized cosmetic bag with a mini powder brush and a huge mirror. It has plenty of room to also include a blush, blush brush and lipstick or lip gloss. The kit comes in five shades – Light, Medium Light, Medium, Medium Dark and Dark. I tried it out in Light. Check it out as I opened it:

I love the products I’ve tried from Jane Iredale, like PureGloss Lip Gloss, PowderMe SPF Dry Sunscreen, and Longest Lash Thickening and Lengthening Mascara, and I was excited to try these foundations. The brand is labeled “the skin care makeup,” so I felt like trying the foundations and primer would be a great way to experience what that means.

I ended up using both foundations together four times, the PurePressed foundation by itself once and Amazing Base by itself once. I used the kit six times prior to this review (probably a couple more in the days leading up to publication!).

I’ll give a step-by-step on the days I wore both!

I started out with my bare face:

jane before

You can see the redness from my rosacea and patches of my eczema on my nose and forehead, and below my left eye.

First thing I did was apply Smooth Affair:

My face doesn’t look much different after applying the primer but I didn’t expect that. This felt like a moisturizer going on. It’s meant to hydrate skin, ease makeup application and help your face of the day last longer.

After Smooth Affair, I put on the PurePressed Base SPF 20 Mineral Foundation:

I did half my face so you could see the great coverage this offers. I applied it using the mini powder brush that came in the set:

This foundation is a pressed mineral foundation, concealer, powder and sunscreen in one. It offers highly-pigmented coverage with a semi-matte finish.

Next, I added a dusting of Amazing Base SPF 20 Loose Mineral Powder Foundation, which is the brand’s original all-in-one foundation:

I used the mini powder brush to apply this as well. I was surprised how perfect these foundations matched my skin tone. I never would have thought something called “Warm Silk” would match me! I usually go for anything labeled fair, ivory, porcelain, etc! My face looks glowy, like my rosacea is just merely some rosy glow coming out on my cheeks. I would have been OK leaving the house like this.

I sprayed my face with Pommist to set all the mineral makeup. I didn’t include a picture of that step, but here’s the bottle shot!

I’ve reviewed the hydration part of this multi-tasker here, but in this case, I used it to set the foundations.

Here’s how I looked after I completed my makeup with Serenity + Scott Brow Gel, Maybelline ColorSensational Lipstick in Untainted Spice, and MAC Cosmetics Blush in either Hang Loose or Stunner, I can’t remember which!:

While I LOVED how my face looked with this makeup, the only down side was how oily my face looked a few hours later in the early afternoon:

I switched my lippie to PureGloss in Tangerine, by the way, that afternoon I took these pics!

Anyway. I didn’t like how shiny my skin became, and I reached for oil-blotting sheets.

After wear-testing it, none of the Starter Kit products caused my sensitive skin to react, which is great. And I am willing to use oil-blotting sheets as a trade-off for the coverage I got. Even thought it’s shiny, my face is still covered, which is important to me due to my struggles with redness.

This Starter Kit is a new offering, launching this month, and will be available on the Jane Iredale site for $55. You can find it HERE. Here’s the price range of the full-size products:

  • Smooth Affair: $48 for 1.7 fl oz.
  • Amazing Base: $44
  • PurePressed: $52
  • Pommist Hydration Spray: $27 for 3.04 fl oz.

If you use only one foundation at a time, this kit will last a while. I used the kit six times before Monday, when I firmed up this review, and I still have days left in my foundations and Pommist, although I’m almost out of my small Smooth Affair.

I think this is a useful way to try Jane Iredale foundation and see if it is a match for your skin. I would buy either the PurePressed or the Amazing Base Loose Mineral Powder foundations, along with Smooth Affair. In fact, I WILL buy them, but pay day isnt’ til Friday, lol! Unlike other primers, it’s not overly velvety to the touch, but really felt hydrating. I liked that. I didn’t use a moisturizer with these products.

Jane Iredale is also available at fine spas, salons, resorts, apothecaries and medical offices in more than 40 countries.

What do you think of this Starter Kit? Have you tried Jane Iredale foundations? Do you like them too? Would you try them? Stay tuned, because next month is my five-year bloggiversary, and Jane Iredale and I are teaming up for a giveaway that might just include this kit!

Great before and after photos Judy. I am impressed w/ the coverage but I have oily skin so I’m pretty sure it will oxidize on me pretty bad.

Thanks for the tip, Aprill! My contact at the brand suggested an oil-absorbing primer, too, I might try that as well!

    • BeautyJudy

Thanks Brooke! When it covered the worse side of my face, I thought I just had to show the difference!

  • Anastasia

I tried several Jane Iredale products before and loves most of them. I think my only disappointment was their eye primer, but that’s all I can think of. Lip Drink and eyelash primer are my daily staples 🙂

    • BeautyJudy

Oh yes, I love that eyelash primer as well! Good picks!!
