Plastic/Saran/Cling Wrap “Ethereal” mani

When I first heard about the Saran Wrap/Cling Wrap/Plastic Wrap mani, I was confused as all get-out. I did some Googling around and found a couple different blogs with tutorials, and discovered how EASY this is to do.

I wish I could remember the one with the YouTube tutorial embedded in the post that I learned this method from, but I did this maybe three weeks ago and my mind is not as good as it used to be LOL I went back to Google to try and find the post, but I found a BUNCH of other blog posts and tutorials instead.

So here’s my take on a how-to for this mani. It’s so easy! Other than a base and top coat, you will need:

  • Saran/Cling/Plastic wrap – cut up 10 small pieces
  • A base color
  • A contrasting color that you will use with the wrap – you can use more than one

I decided to try for a shimmery plastic wrap mani, and choose Ulta Professional Nail Lacquer in Whatever Floats Your Moat as my base. I did two coats:

Let this dry. I used a coat of Seche Vite over it to help it dry quicker. If you don’t let your polish dry, the wrap will stick to all of your polish and your look will be gross messy instead of the “cool” messy you’re going after.

Here’s my Cling Wrap, already laid out for me and each piece bunched up:

When you’re ready to put your Saran/Cling/Plastic wrap to work, you can do one of two things. You can paint one coat of your contrasting color – in my case, it was L’Oreal The Temptress’ Power (gorgeous duochrome of light gold with green and copper shift). Pick up one of your pieces of wrap, and blot it two or three times on the nail. The color will come off in a messy, abstract pattern.

Or, you can pool the contrasting color nail polish, dip the wrap into it, then blot your nails. Either way, same effect!

Lather, rinse and repeat the above step for all your digits.

See? Easy, right?!

Just make sure you have a trash can or something near by to dispose of your plastic pieces, or this could be messy!

Here’s my finished product:

I loved how this had an ethereal, Earth-like look to it! What a gorgeous color combo!

Saran/Plastic/Cling Wrap manis are a great alternative to a marble mani. It’s not exactly the same look, but it’s easier and in my opinion, less messy!

So what do you think? Have you tried this type of nail art yet? What are your favorite color combos?! I’m itching to do one with fall colors! Share your thoughts below!
