World Blood Donor Day

Have you ever given blood?

I have, twice. I’m about as afraid of needles and donating blood as I am of flying and turbulence…VERY afraid. Like, upset stomach and anxiety like crazy. Sweaty palms, etc. But I know giving blood is for a good cause, so every so many years when I can get up the courage, I donate! The last time I did was last year!

Anyway. Today is World Blood Donor Day!

Did you know?

·         One pint of blood can save up to three lives

·         Blood shortages occur most frequently in summer due to vacation schedules

·         Someone needs blood every two seconds

·         If 1% more Americans gave blood, all national blood shortages would disappear for the foreseeable future

·         Most Americans will require a blood transfusion at some point in their lives

·         Donors can give whole blood up to 6 times a year

About America’s Blood Centers
Founded in 1962, America’s Blood Centers is North America’s largest network of community-based blood programs. The federation of 77 blood centers together operates more than 600 collection sites in 45 U.S. states and Canada, providing half of the U.S. and all of the Canadian volunteer donor blood supply.  These blood centers serve an area with more than 180 million people and provide blood products and services to more than 4,200 hospitals and healthcare facilities across North America.

About the American Red Cross:
The American Red Cross shelters, feeds and provides emotional support to victims of disasters; supplies nearly half of the nation’s blood; teaches lifesaving skills; provides international humanitarian aid; and supports military members and their families. The Red Cross is a charitable organization — not a government agency — and depends on volunteers and the generosity of the American public to perform its mission. For more information, visit

I received the above information from Nexcare Bandage, which runs the Nexcare give program. You can register to receive free samples of the give “Saving a Life is Stylish” bandage collection by visiting the Nexcare Facebook page (accessible via Here, you can also find local participating blood centers and share personal stories with friends and the broader give community. OK. So it’s World Blood Donor Day. But BeautyJudy is a beauty blog! What does this have to do with anything!?

Well, what can I say. By giving blood you’re helping someone stay warm and beautiful. You’re showing INNER beauty and selflessness by giving blood. So hey, it ties in! 🙂

That, and I don’t like to pass up an opportunity to do a themed mani 🙂

My World Blood Donor Day mani, ta-da!

Here’s what I used:

I used two coats of OPI Skull & Glossbones as the base. I used two coats of Kleancolor Red-Hot over all nails except my left ring finger! I spiced it up with my freehand rendition of the “Dexter” logo using Nubar two-way nail art pen in Classic Red. Dexter is my favorite blood guy 🙂

And posing with my donor card 🙂 –

Thanks for popping in – what about you? Have you ever donated blood?!
