Swatches: China Glaze Retro Diva preview

With its Retro Diva collection, China Glaze is putting a twist on its tagline – from “Live in Colour” to “Relive in Colour.” Although I’ve heard that it seems to be a 70s-themed collection, it took me back to the 80s as well (you’ll see what I mean!). Some of the names – like Cruisin’ and Free Love – also remind me of the 50s or 60s.

Here’s three funkadelic colors from the 12-piece collection:

Short & Sassy is garnet shimmer with black undertone and in the sunlight, it shines beautifully! I was disappointed my camera wouldn’t focus for the bottle shot, but you can see the dark of the polish OK. Short & Sassy is what I’ll wear with a black dress and black heels to one of the fall weddings I have in October. Sassy with class. Although I like it, and I don’t own a color quite like this, I can see how it may be easy to pass this one up as just another red in search of  one of the more unique colors for fall. But don’t!

Let’s Groove is deep grape shimmer that reminds me of Earth Wind and Fire (see, here’s that 80s reference I was talking about – see more here!). I’d buy this by name alone! But this is more than just a name, it’s an awesome purple – not the hotter, brighter purples of summer (ie OPI Purple with a Purpose, China Glaze Grape Juice), not the deep, dark purples of winter (ie OPI Lincoln Park After Dark) . Just an in-between purple shimmer for an in-between season.

I saved my favorite for last. China Glaze brings a stunning silvery gray taupe to life in its Retro Diva collection. It makes me think: Studio 54. It’s more taupe than silver in the top photo, but then in the second it looks *almost* gunmetal. I just love the shimmer…I just love it! This is one of the unique fall colors I’ll be wearing a lot!

The polishes were easy to apply and only required two coats. I would have loved to see something else very 70s, like a shimmery avocado green (a la appliances like the dishwasher, fridge and stove in my old apartment!), but I don’t know that avocado green is a color that fits this fall.

The collection is already available to purchase at Head2Toe Beauty.

Which one do you like?!
