Accept No Imitations – CND Cracks Down on Shellac Use at Salons

I don’t generally post press releases, but this one is important to me as a salon customer, and as a blogger who has had several conversations with other women about CND Shellac. It disheartens me how many women have said “it damaged my nails,” or that it’s “just like gel polish, right?” No. It’s not, and no, it shouldn’t damage your nails. Not if your salon is following the proper process for giving you a Shellac mani or pedi. Check out the info below, about how CND is going to ensure that when we go to a CND-certified salon, we are truly going to get the Shellac experience from start to finish.

CND Cracks Down to Ensure Quality Control
With Shellac Salon Certification Program

January 2012 – As Nail Professionals and consumers can attest, all nail services are NOT created equal! Factors include the skill and proper training of the Nail Professional and the quality of the products used. CND Shellac Power Polish™ is a one-of-a-kind product with easy, non-damaging removal that sets it apart from “me-too” products and gel manicures. When used as directed, it comes off quickly and easily without harming the natural nail – no filing is necessary for application or removal.

So what happens when consumers ask for a CND Shellac Power Polish service, but receive something completely different (although they may be told it’s CND Shellac)? CND hears stories continually about women who have unintentionally tried “gel-polish” and Shellac pretenders, and then ruined their nails trying to remove it. Salon clients across the U.S. will soon be assured that the CND Shellac services they receive have CND’s official seal of approval.

CND is cracking down on CND Shellac fraud by implementing a CND Shellac Salon Certification Program. This program deploys CND Education Ambassadors to visit salons across the country who registered on cnd.com as Shellac Salons. To be a certified CND Shellac Salon, a CND representative will visit the salon, provide training and review protocol (no mixing systems or filing on the nail…ever!). Salons that meet the criteria will be awarded CND’s seal of approval. Look for the “Certified” window cling in the entrance to the salon and icon on cnd.com’s Salon Locator.

“Our CND Shellac Salon Certification Program will ensure the ultimate experience for clients and will provide a great incentive to Nail Professionals to provide exemplary CND Shellac services,” says CND Co-Founder, Jan Arnold.

As an educated consumer, here are some pointers for making sure you receive the REAL CND Shellac:

1)    Look for the CND seal of approval on the window of your salon.
2)    Ask if the salon uses CND Shellac products.
3)    Watch the products that are being used during the service – if you do not see “CND Shellac” on the bottle, it’s not Shellac.
4)    During removal, do not allow soaking of nails in a bowl of acetone – request CND Shellac Remover Wraps or cotton and tin foil removal method.

The program is rolling out first in New York, California, Nevada, Colorado, Ohio and Chicago, and will expand across the US in 2012.

Amen. This is the number one reason I haven’t gotten a Shellac mani or pedi since I went to CosmoProf last summer – the salons around here have the Shellac polish, but they don’t use the entire system start to finish. I accepted an imitation once, and it damaged my nails! So I’m really glad to hear that CND is doing this.

I was excited to see this! What do you think? I’m looking forward to checking out the Straight On ’til Morning Liner, Magic Tink Tint, Fairy Face Palette!

Deborah Lippmann The Future is Yours

Deborah Lippmann really knows how to do a duochrome.

The Future is Yours is a gorgeous, sheer, light greenish blue with purple/pink shift. It’s all my favorite colors in one polish.

Please note that some of my pics are blurry on purpose, to show off the color shift!

*Swoon* I’m in love with this polish. I had no issues in application. I love the Deborah Lippmann bottle, formula, brush and concept so with this one, it’s all win.

I can’t recall whether this is two or three coats…and I ordered mine from Barneys, I think, in November? I really can’t remember. I’m gettin’ old, friends. Ha!

So what do you think of The Future is Yours?!

Nicole by OPI Kardashian Kolor Collection

The Kardashian clan. They are loved. They are hated. Honestly? I could care less.

I’ve seen maybe five minutes of one of their reality shows. I don’t know much about them except they’re reality stars, and Kim is a sexy woman; I wouldn’t say I’ve got a girl crush on her but I can see what all the hoopla is over her looks. She’s pretty.

But beyond these opinions, I’ve got nothing. Oh yeah, except these gorgeous nail polishes that make up the Kardashian Kolor Collection, which was the Nicole by OPI holiday collection and practically flew off my local Walmart shelf!

Says Nicole by OPI in a press release, “Nicole by OPI joins the Kardashian/Jenner family in announcing the launch of Kardashian Kolors, 14 new nail lacquer shades inspired by these six trendsetting women. Kris Jenner and her five daughters – Kourtney, Kim and Khloe Kardashian, and Kylie and Kendall Jenner – are known for their head-to-toe unique style, which now includes nails!”

I apologize I’m just getting around to reviewing these now, they were sent to me a couple months ago but with my health issues and crazy work schedule, I was unable to get to them when it was actually timely – bummer! However, I noticed over the weekend that these polishes have a place in the Nicole by OPI display at Walmart, so I’m guessing they have become a bit more permanent than a normal holiday collection, so you might still be able to find them if you missed out on them late last year!

Onto swatches!

It’s All About the Glam:

It’s All About the Glam is a white shimmer – it looks like it’s got super subtle pink shimmer in it – that was just a mess. This polish was goopy, streaky and difficult to work with. It’s shown above in three coats. I thought a third would cut down on the streakiness, but it continued to streak and got goopy. Ick.

 Hard Kourt Fashionista:

Hard Kourt Fashionita is a deep brown creme with a bit of a red undertone that applied wonderfully and looked shiny in two coats.

 All Kendall-ed Up:

All Kendall-ed Up is a pretty bright pink creme. This one also applied great; I love the OPI/Nicole by OPI creme formula. Applies like butter!

Sealed With a Kris:

Sealed With a Kris is a deep red creme that looks much lighter in my photos for some reason.

Kourt is Red-y For a Pedi:

Kourt is Red-y For a Pedi is a coral red. It’s not quite opaque in two coats; you can see some VNL. It applied well.

Khloe Had a Little Lam-Lam:

Khloe Had a Little Lam-Lam is a gorgeous, deep green that’s got a slight dusty look to it but in a totally vampy way. I love this color. It’s almost like it wants to be teal, but it’s not. Gorgeous!

My Empire…My Rules:

My Empire…My Rules is a taupe – or camo – color. Another one that applied great and looks gorgeous.

Kim-Pletely in Love:

Kim-Pletely in Love is a pretty, sheer pink shimmer with a subtle green/pink shimmer shift. You can see a little of my yellowed nail through the color, but I like the VNL you can see. I like this one. Although “Kim-Pletely in Love” is Kim-Pletely a joke now!

Listen to Your Momager!:

Listen to Your Momager! is a jewel-toned blue shimmer. Kinda a bust for me. I mean, it’s a gorgeous color and I love blue, but I feel like I’ve been there, done that with this color.

Wear Something Spar-Kylie:

 Over All Kendall-ed Up:

Wear Something Spar-Kylie is an opaque pink glitter in a light pink jelly base. It’s like there’s a couple different, completely complementary pink glitters in the formula, with some slightly larger pieces. It’s a gorgeous glitter.

 Disco Dolls:

Disco Dolls is a golden glitter, and slightly larger silver, pink and green glitters all in a clear base. At first I thought the slightly larger pieces were holographic but as I stared at the bottle they looked pretty solid to me. It’s a really cool combination – I don’t have a dupe of this in my stash!

Follow Me On Glitter:

Follow Me On Glitter is silver glitter, with with slightly larger pink, silver, green and blue glitter pieces in a charcoal jelly base. The whole thing has a blueish hint to it, and it’s just beautiful. Very opaque. Another one unique in my stash.

Rainbow in the S-Kylie:

Over It’s All About the Glam:

Rainbow in the S-Kylie is a fun rainbow of brightly-colored, variously-sized glitter in a clear base. I can’t recall if my first two swatches are two or three coats, but if you don’t mind some nail showing it looks great. I’d put it over a base color, though. I tried it out over It’s All About the Glam, because I hoped to make that polish a bit better, and it looked neat.

Kendall on the Katwalk:

Over Listen to Your Momager!:

Kendall on the Katwalk is another amazing polish from this collection. It’s magenta, blue and green glitter in a light blue jelly base. It’s simply stunning, another with no dupe, opaque in two coats. I tried it on over Listen to Your Momager! to see how it would do and I think I may like it better on its own!

 Color Thoughts

Overall, this is an amazing collection.

Let me explain my thoughts on this collection this way: Remember back in the day, when CDs were the hip way to buy your music? I would buy CDs, and most often, just listen to the songs I liked on the albums and skip through the other songs. But there were a few CDs – Acoustic Soul by India Arie, Save the Last Dance soundtrack, to name a couple - that I could put on and listen to over and over from song one to the end, enjoying every bit of groove and mellow.

That’s how I feel about this collection. Is It’s All About the Glam a dud? Yes. But this collection as a whole is like a favorite CD for me, I could keep playing - or rather, wearing – it, and enjoying the polishes each time.

Dupe Talk

So I will start off by saying I don’t believe Disco Dolls, Follow Me On Glitter or Kendall on the Katwalk have dupes. Some might think that Follow Me On Glitter looks like Hello Kitty Silver Star or China Glaze Some Like It Haute – but the difference is that those two have holographic glitters, whereas Follow Me On Glitter has colored glitter pieces that aren’t.

  • Rainbow In the S-Kylie: and it all started with Deborah Lippmann’s Happy Birthday…this Kardashian polish is dupable. Maybe not exactly in how the glitter is made up – sizes might be different as well as some colors – but in addition to Happy Birthday there’s a Confetti polish (CVS brand…not sure of the name of it) that looks similar and even the OPI Rainbow Connection polish from the Muppets Collection is similar. Color Club Wish Upon A Rock-Star, however, I would not call a dupe.
  • I think the cremes in the collection are dupable. With taupe a trendy color, pink of any shade an evergreen hue and tons of renditions of red and coral, these have a great formula (bought at Walmart!) to fall back on when considering whether or not to purchase.

Application Issues

As I mentioned, It’s All About the Glam is the polish that gave me application issues. I had no real issues with the rest of the collection. The glitters were a dream, I was so pleased at their opacity! Truly an amazing part of the collection!!

Additional Information

As I mentioned, these polishes were a holiday collection. So the availability is different now. However, I did spot the rack in the regular cosmetics aisle with slots for these. So you may still be able to find them. At my Walmart they were picked over, but who knows if they’ll be restocking? Those glitters? They are WORTH stalking Walmart for if you don’t have them.

You can read more information about the collection, and about the launch with the Kardashians, here.

Final Thoughts

This collection was a must-have for me. I can firmly say that if samples were not provided I would have been hitting every Walmart in my area to complete the collection for my own. I would have even bought It’s All About the Glam (although I would have been disappointed after I brought her home)!

What did you think of this collection? I know it’s so “last year,” but share your thoughts in the comments below! Did you have a fav?!

The Beauty Loser Weekly Update 1/24/2012

OK, I seriously lack in recent photos of myself. So I provide you the brochure I got for the surgery I had done yesterday – TA DA! *sigh* I am hoping to include a before/after shot next week. It’s about time for that, there’s definitely a difference!

Well, friends. It had to happen. I’ve had it pretty good so far but this week, I logged a gain on the scale.

I decided to think about my week a little bit and reflect on the choices I made. The truth is, because of my gall bladder, I haven’t really wanted to make poor eating decisions in over a month. I’d been avoiding fat like the plague so I didn’t have another attack before my surgery. So what happened? Here’s where I made bad choices:

I overate at meals.

Instead of a regular bowl of pho, I ate a large one. And I mean, I ATE it. Instead of one soft pretzel, I had two. And a half. Instead of the dressing mixed into my Salad Works salad, I asked for dressing on the side in addition to it, and I dumped the whole thing in there. Instead of one serving of cereal, I would eat at least double the serving size of both cereal and milk. I almost kicked a half gallon of fat free milk all by myself in one day!

You see, while I wasn’t eating foods that were bad for me, I was eating too much of the foods that are good for me (soft pretzels not included). I also didn’t meet my weekly goal of tracking my food in my weekly food journal. I stopped only one day into the new week.

Portion control is something I needed a refresher course on, so as I began the new week, I whipped out the measuring cups for the cereal and the milk, to help get back on track with how much I was eating.

Next week will not be a fair assessment of my weight loss journey. From what I understand, I may lose about 5 lbs having my gall bladder removed and I will likely not be eating normally for a couple days. The true test to my refresher on portion control will be the week that I am truly able to eat normally again, and make choices among anything I want.

The Stats

So, here’s my stats for the week:

Weight at start of the week: 200.2 lbs.

Weight at end of the week: 200.8 lbs.

That’s a total of 0.6 lbs gain, for a grand total of 19.4 lbs down!!! (I still celebrate, because I have still come so far!)

Goals for the coming week!

  • Recover from surgery

It’s as simple as that. I can’t put exercise or food goals into my week when my biggest job is to get back to 100%.

When you have a small set back or weakness in achieving your goals – whether it’s weight loss or something else – how do you approach it mentally? Do you let it get your down or pick yourself up and move on?

Have a good week! I’ve got posts prepped for the week, so enjoy while I am recovering!

Goodbye, Gall Bladder

I’m never one to pass up an opportunity for occasion-appropriate nail art (World Water Day? World Blood Donor Day? Or how about the Winter Olympics in Vancouver, 2010?).

But gall bladder surgery nails? Hmmm.

I did have some trepidation. My colleague at work asked me, “are you going to do gall bladder nails?!” And we had a good joke when I laughed and said I’d probably not even wear nail polish to surgery. Then when I got home and retold the story to Mike, he laughed and got enthusiastic. “Why not?!” He asked. “You could do a little gall bladder, and then dollar signs for how much money it’s costing you!” (thanks, health insurance, although at the same time I’m annoyed, thank you, because I HAVE health insurance).

Well, Mike’s ideas were catchy, and I’m kitschy, so here’s my gall bladder manicure!

You’re probably wondering what the heck those things all are…

  • Thumb represents the money I’m putting out for the surgery.
  • Index finger celebrates Chinese New Year, because if I wasn’t having surgery today, I would have done a Chinese New Year mani! Happy New Year!
  • The middle finger is gall stones
  • The ring finger is the gall bladder (the pear shaped organ with ducts/veins or whatever coming out of it.
  • The pinky is a bloody scalpel. I have a sick sense of humor, I suppose!

Closer look at gall stones:

This is where I got the description from:

Not perfect but I tried! And here’s a closer look at the gall bladder:

And where I got the description from:

I skipped the red veins inside it.

Nothing here is perfect, but I had some fun doing this. It definitely took the edge off my nervousness to paint my nails like this!

I used a whole host of supplies.:

  • Two coats of Essie Topless & Barefoot for all nails except the index finger.
  • Two coats of Sally Hansen Complete Salon Manicure Golden Ticket for index finger.
  • Red, green, black and white Stripe Rite nail striper lacquers.
  • Silver (name is missing from bottom of bottle) nail art lacquer - Art Club
  • Fimo pieces (not sure what they are, but they reminded me together of Chinese New Year!)
  • Water decals (money)
  • A coat of Seche Vite after initial painting of base colors. Seche Vite to finish whole thing off.
  • Konad Top Coat for adhering fimo to index finger
  • Oh yes! And Seche Rebuild for base coat

Thanks for stopping by today! I have posts scheduled for this week while I recover. Have a good one!

Baby, It’s Cold Outside – Perfect for an Ice Mani!

A friend had asked me if I have done or would do an ice mani. I “Googled” it and found a number of very cool nail art designs. Since I saw a number of different manicures labled as ice mani’s, I just decided to do what seemed to best fit the description for me!

On Saturday, this is what my back yard looked like:

And this is the slushy street outside my house:

I decided Saturday was a good day for me to try out my ice mani vision!

It’s very simple. I used Seche Rebuild as my base coat. I used two coats of Nicole by OPI It’s All About the Glam. I used a coat of Qtica Extending Top Coat over it. Then I did a gradient with the Color Club glitter Jingle Jangle, going over each nail three times, concentrating the most glitter near the tips of the nails. I finished with a coat of Seche Vite. Here’s swatches!

I thought it turned out very pretty. I always picture blue and white when I picture ice and snow, even though technically there is no blue in the equation!

It’s All About the Glam is actually a thick formula. I wouldn’t wear this on its own, because it looked streaky after two coats. I originally swatched it with three coats and I can tell you that this kind of polish doesn’t get better with more coats, it gets goopier and streakier. Here’s one of my swatch photos from when I first received the Kardashian collection (review to come sometime soon on all of them):

I tried to make it not so streaky but you can definitely see the goopy and streaky.

Jingle Jangle was great to work with, no application issues there.

So what do you think of this ice mani? Have you tried one? What’s your method?

Disclaimer: Nicole by OPI It’s All About the Glam and Qtica Extending Top Coat were provided to me for review by the PR Firms/Manufacturers. The bottle of Seche Rebuild I am now using was a gift from the PR Firm/Manufacturer at a trade show. Please visit my Disclosure tab for more information on how BeautyJudy.com keeps it real!

Zoya Feel Collection

I’ll be honest. My first choice for a nail polish is not to grab a neutral. I like to live life in color.

But when I saw the Zoya Feel Collection, I felt like “neutral” took on new meaning. And I also felt ready for the soft, snowy-winter look that the Feel Collection has for me. I get worn out on anything if I wear too much of it, and December was a month dedicated to holiday reds, greens and metallics.

Let’s get to swatchin!

Kristen:

Kristen is described as a “gull gray” creme. It definitely popped as blue with my skin tone, but the first swatch is more real-life in how this color looked on the nail (as well as in the bottle). My favorite color is blue, so it’s only natural that this was my favorite of the collection!

Carey:

Carey is described as a “periwinkle grey” creme. Grey has been a trendy color to sport for a while, in all shades from deep and dark to light and dusty. Carey is a good, January grey. Isn’t it almost like what the clouds look like right before or during a snowstorm? I could be crazy. But that’s what this reminds me of!

Kennedy:

Kennedy is described as a “full French beige” creme. Doesn’t Zoya do beige and nude neutrals great? Total work appropriate color, but trendy at the same time.

Megan:

Megan is described as a “taupe grey” creme. I only have one swatch photo of Megan. Not because I dislike her, but because I could never remember my darn camera during daylight hours and only took pics at night. I wore Megan for three days. I had tip wear but no chipping. How awesome is that?! I’m loving Zoya’s formula – it meshes well with my body chemistry.

Kendal:

Kendal is described as a “rose quartz beige” creme. I like the description, because it’s like someone added a bit of pink to Kennedy to lighten her up. This one is pretty, I love how light pink neutral colors look on me!

Avery:

Avery is described as a “blonde beige” creme. Perhaps because I’m a natural blonde, with the fair skintone to show, is why this blonde beige creme didn’t really seem to go well with my coloring. But it’s still a nice pick for a neutral. I’d love to see this on darker skin tones.

Color Thoughts

This collection of neutrals is nice and … soft. I love that they are full coverage – these were opaque in two coats. I also appreciate the variations of grey and beige with rose, periwinkle and blue. I think it’s a well-rounded neutral collection.

Dupe Talk

I’m  having a hard time looking at this collection piece by piece to decide what might be dupes. Usually dupes stand out to me, and I’m sure there are polishes I could compare these with. But I am having trouble looking at them without the others complementing them! I do think that these muted, greyed-out colors are more common than say a year and a half ago, and you could likely find something similar to those picks in this collection, as well as the beige-based colors. Just don’t ask me what. ‘Cause right now I’m drawing blanks and too lazy to go figure it out in my stash (I’m getting back into a blogging routine…baby steps here…hehe)

Application Issues

I had no application issues with these cremes. Like I said – two coats to opacity, and they were dreamy cremes.

Additional Information

Each 0.5 fl oz polish in the Feel Collection retails for the SRP of $8. You can find the Zoya Feel Collection on the Zoya website (linked to in the second paragraph of this post). These have been available since November. I FINALLY have two stores in my area that carry Zoya – my Image Beauty and another beauty shop in my local, Deptford Mall (they have the big tall display of sooooo many colors!) – but I haven’t seen this collection in those stores yet.

Zoya polishes are free of harmful industrial chemicals like toluene, camphor, formaldehyde, resin, dibutyl phthalate (DBP) that are known to cause cancer and birth defects.

Final Thoughts

Like I said in the beginning of this post, neutrals are not my go-to. But I wore four of these in a row, enjoying the soft look of my nails even when the weather around me was harsh and cold. Kristen is my favorite, but I really enjoy looking at these as a collection. They’re so darn pretty!

What do you think of the Feel Collection? How do you feel about neutrals?

Hello Kitty Silver Star

I love shopping after Christmas. I never know what bargains I’m going to find. I scour the circulars for Black Friday shopping, but the day after Christmas, I go to my favorite shops and hope for something good!

The little gem you see in the picture above was “something good” that I found at Sephora after Christmas! Hello Kitty Liquid Nail Art in Silver Star. This polish was located in a small glass bin and on sale for $5.

The bottle is an adorable glass Hello Kitty face. It was actually comfortable to hold the bottle like this while I polished the hand holding the bottle:

How about some swatches?! Oh, and please be kind. My nails are in HORRIFIC shape right now. From a couple months of wearing the same polish for days, not taking care of my cuticles…stress-biting the skin on the sides of my nails…what a hot, dry mess. I’m working on helping them to bounce back:

Silver Star is a steel microglitter and round, silver holographic glitter pieces in a clear base. It was pretty opaque in the two coats I used for my mani. Three coats would ensure opacity.

I’m currently using Barielle Natural Nail Camoflauge as a base coat and Seche Vite for a top coat. And I have to say, in the less than 24 hours I wore this, it was chippy on me. I might wear this over a base color next time.

Otherwise, the brush was easy to manage and the formula was ok.

If you like what you see, it’s still available, along with two other limited edition shades, here. All three are $5, while other Hello Kitty polishes are $10.

Oh, and I thought this was interesting. I know I have Silver Star, but look at the sticker on the bottom of my bottle:

Oopsy!

What do you think of Silver Star friends?!

The Beauty Loser Weekly Update 01/16/2012

My face, October 2011:

And my face today:

Can you tell that my cheeks are starting to slim down?!

This week, it’s all about enjoying the changes I see and taking a moment to feel a bit of pride in what I’ve accomplished in 13 weeks.

When I look at those two face photos, I see myself now as less chubby around the nostril and mouth and cheek area. I even notice the slimming that’s happening in my neck.

I notice that I’m now fitting into my size 16 Old Navy jeans, although the dress pants I bought at NY&Co were 18s. Um, still. I am able to shop there again! And those dress pants – I bought them right before Christmas and they’re already fitting a little looser.

Everyone that knows me has noticed my body is changing. I am so flattered that my coworkers, friends, family and fr-amily (that’s friends who are more like family!) are commenting on my slimming figure. Their notice is a reminder that I am doing something concrete, and I’m making a difference in my body, in my life and there’s no turning back now!

I believe in rewarding yourself for doing a good job at something or accomplishing a goal. Two weeks ago, I finally decided I deserved a treat for my weeks of successful lifestyle changes. So I took myself to a salon (Ulta), got my hair cut and styled differently, and had red and blonde highlights added! Here’s a pic, not sure if you can see it too well!

Getting color in my hair is not something I do often because it’s costly. The only two times I’ve dyed my hair, I had a great hook-up and really underpaid for it. But now, without that hook-up, I pay salon prices. I’m so glad I splurged! I love my hair, and I feel confident between my new look and my body.

The message here is: Treat yourself when you work hard at and succeed at something. You deserve it! Just don’t rest on your laurels LOL!

The Stats

So with all that said and done, here’s my stats for the week:

Weight at start of the week 2: 201.4 lbs.

Weight at end of the week 2: 200.2 lbs.

That’s a total of 1.2 lbs down, for a grand total of 20 lbs down!!!

Goals for the coming week!

  • Tracking my food. I have slacked off journaling what I eat and how many Weight Watchers PointsPlus my food is, and I am pledging to write down what I eat this week, no matter what.
  • Drink more water. Since I need to avoid caffeine with my gall bladder, I’ve been drinking hot decaf tea. TONS of it. I need to get in more water during the day, less tea.
  • Eat less sodium. This is something I’ve been thinking a lot about. I want to become more conscious of how much sodium I am consuming.

What about you? Have you had any big accomplishments that need celebrating?! Share in the comments below - I want to celebrate with you!!!
